Maybe you’ve noticed that with the change in seasons you’re starting to have a bit of a wobble. I know I’ve certainly found that the shorter days and darker nights have affected my own confidence a little. It’s what I call an Autumn wobble, though some might call it the Autumn Blues.
You might be wondering what’s going on, where it’s all coming from, and whether you’ll be able to regain your confidence. I’m here to tell you that there is lots you can do to rebuild your self-esteem and feel confident in your abilities again.
Autumn is a great time to reflect
One of the most powerful things you can do right now is to look back on the year and reflect on your successes. Since I’ve been doing this, it has really helped me to see how far I’ve come, to think of all the clients I’ve worked with and, more importantly, how far they’ve come since we worked together. It’s so inspiring to think of all the successes that I’ve been part of this year with other people.
Typically we wait until the new year to do all of our new year’s resolutions and goal-setting. But Autumn is actually a much more useful time to look back on your year, and to celebrate the successes you’ve achieved.
How to use reflection to boost your self-confidence
When you sit down to reflect on your year, the first thing to do is to notice all the positives from 2021. What went well in spite of the difficulties of the pandemic? What about all the things that have gone well as a result of the pandemic, that wouldn’t have happened had it not been for the pandemic?
Make sure you take the time to celebrate all those positives. Ordinarily, life moves so quickly that we forget to acknowledge those successes or allow ourselves to feel pride in our achievements. Feeling grateful for the good things that have happened to us is a great way to boost your mood.
Next, have a look at the things that could’ve gone better. What positive learning can you take from the things that didn’t go quite as well as you’d hoped? Have a think about what you could do to help them go better next time.
Finally, what are the things that you’ve decided that you won’t do again? Is there anything that felt misaligned or that made you feel unhappy or out of place? If you noticed anything like this, make an active decision not to do them again in the future. By continually reflecting on your experiences in this way, you’ll be able to create a life that brings you joy and contentment.
What can you do right now to stop the Autumn wobble?
As well as the reflection technique I’ve described above, there are more ways to overcome the Autumn blues and stop the wobble in its tracks.
1: Make life full.
Look for opportunities to fill your life with positives. Whether that’s getting on the phone and talking to a friend, watching or listening to a motivating podcast or youtube video, or taking yourself out for a walk in nature. Take positive steps to make life fun rather than sitting still in the negative emotions you’re feeling.
2: Don’t let other people take your joy.
This is a really important one. Have you ever noticed that you are feeling drained by being around someone that takes your joy away? There might be a particular friend, relation, or acquaintance who exacerbates your feelings of low self-confidence. Notice this and take action to spend less time with this person, because your joy is very precious.
3: Be curious.
By this I mean, have curiosity over criticism, and stop judging other people. Quite often we jump to conclusions about other people and why they are behaving in a certain way, for example if they’re being a bit grumpy. It’s what I call mind-reading, which none of us can truly do. So instead of assuming you know what’s going on for that person, be curious and be kind. It’s a good way to boost your own mood too, by avoiding getting caught up in those negative emotions.
