We are all aware of our Mind Monkeys, that Chimp that sits there nagging you, saying things like “You can’t do this” … “don’t try it” and I think we all know how difficult it is to shut that chimp up. I certainly do … and one of the things I’ve been working on with my own coach is shutting up my own Mind Monkey, it’s a tough task and it does take practice and repetition … practice makes perfect.
Sometimes you get to a point where you start to think your Mind Monkey is never going to shut up and it keeps taking control, and that’s the really deep rooted stuff, that your unconscious believes that either you are not good enough or you can’t do this, or it’s too scary …what if? What if?
And it’s really hard to unpick it … so in my last session with my NLP Coach Tracey Cole, I decided I was going to sort this Chimp out, because I knew consciously that I am capable of “Living my dream” and coaching other ladies but this Chimp has kept chipping in.
So we had a session using one of the tools that I use, it’s quite common for us coaches to not be able to do on ourselves what we are able to do for others!
So my session with Tracey went ahead and straight away my mind monkey was really jumping in after only a couple of seconds of Tracey making or suggesting things, my monkey was going “no no no you can’t do that, can’t do that, you can’t do that”, so I was distracted, so as we did the first round I said “I can’t”, she laughed and said “You bloody well can”.
I said no my mind monkey is just there, chattering away in my ear and I can’t listen to what you are saying because he is sat there going “no you can’t do it, no no ne ne ne ne na na ne ne”
So she worked her magic again and then said “What’s the chimp doing now?” and I said “I’ve put a gag on him, I’ve shut him up, yeah! He can’t speak now”… she said “oh that’s a bit cruel”. Then I thought OMG yeah that’s cruel!! Animal cruelty!!
So I said right let’s do the next round … so we did the next round and she asked what is the chimp doing now and I said “ahhh he’s sat on a chair eating a banana, in fact he has a box of full of banana’s that’s going to keep him quiet while I get on with what I’m going to do”
And that was a massive, massive turning point for me!!!
And do you know what …. That chimp is still sat on that chair stuffing his face with them banana’s, also he isn’t getting any fatter so he is doing something like running around the lanes when I’m not looking.
But every time I think of my chimp now, he’s sat on his chair stuffing himself with bananas and has got nothing to say to me!!
Well! How powerful is that? I am blown away and every day I am almost checking in with that chimp to go “Do you need some more bananas’ mate? Here you go have another box”
So what’s your chimp up to today? Sit him on a chair & feed him some bananas to keep him quiet!
